What is Scottish County Dancing?
Scottish Country Dancing is the official form of social dancing in Scotland. It is among the expected activities at ceilidhs, receptions, dinner dances and, of course, Tartan Balls.
Although the “country” seems to imply "folk" dancing, the term is probably derived from the Latin “contra,” which (in this case) means “in straight, opposing lines.” Sets are made up of an equal number of men and women, usually six to ten. The set of dancers then moves through the patterns and progressions, changing partners frequently both during and between the dances. This characteristic makes Scottish Country Dancing an ideal way to meet new people in a safe, friendly atmosphere.
